Als Christopher von Graffenried im Jahre 1710 mit einer Gruppe deutscher und Schweizer Siedler nach Amerika segelte, hätte er wohl nie gedacht, dass beinahe 300 Jahre später einer aus seiner Familie das von ihm gegründete New Bern zum Ausgangspunkt für eine fotografische Arbeit über das Amerika von heute nehmen würde.

Genau das tat der Fotokünstler Michael von Graffenried aus «old» Bern. Insgesamt verbrachte er zwei Monate in der amerikanischen Kleinstadt mit den zwei Waffenplätzen, den 200 privaten Kirchen und den 40 Prozent schwarzen Einwohnern. Er hielt Szenen aus dem Country Club, dem Armenviertel, dem High School Ball und der Kaserne der Militärs fest. Mit seiner Panoramakamera dokumentiert er zeitgenössische amerikanische Realität. Seine Arbeit «Our Town» war im Oktober 2006 in der Bank of Arts in New Bern, NC, USA zu sehen.

Michael von Graffenried decided to discover New Bern. The award winning photographer, who has settled in Paris, France, has an undying curiosity about the citizens of the world. His passion for photography has produced more than 25 books and has taken him all around the world, from Europe to Sudan, Russia, Algeria and Asia. Although he has been in countries plagued by war and conflicts, he says that the most interesting stories are those of everyday life. He knew about New Bern, and saw in the project the opportunity to see for himself an example of everyday life in today’s America.

And so, the photographer went back and forth for one year. From the Country Club to the poorest neighbourhoods, from the typical High School prom to several of many Sunday services, the celebration of New Bern men based in Iraq to Muslim refugees, he has tried to capture with his panoramic pictures the reality of this American town.

Gleichzeitig wird in der Galerie Bernhard Bischoff & Partner seine Fotoinstallation INSIDE CAIRO gezeigt, die bisher einzig auf den Dächern Kairos zu sehen war. Zusätzlich präsentiert die Galerie Panorama Fotografien aus den letzten zehn Jahren.

At the same time his photoinstallation INSIDE CAIRO only shown until now on the rooftop in Downtown Cairo in march this year will be on display in the Galerie Bernhard Bischoff & Partners together with his panoramic photographs ot the last 10 years.
