Michael von Graffenried wurde 1957 in Bern geboren, er lebt und arbeitet in Paris. Aus dem Fotojournalismus kommend, arbeitet er heute an Langzeitprojekten, die er medienübergreifend präsentiert und oft auch im öffentlichen Raum ausstellt. Sein zusammen mit Mohammed Soudani produzierter Dokumentarfilm Guerre sans images wurde 2002 am Filmfestival Locarno uraufgeführt. Seine Bilder waren in Museums- und Galerieausstellungen sowohl in Frankreich und der Schweiz als auch in New York, Algier, Hong-kong und Beirut zu sehen und sind in zahlreichen Sammlungen vertreten, so in der Fotostiftung Schweiz (Schweizerische Stiftung für die Photographie) in Winterthur, im Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne oder in der Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Meist publiziert er die Ergebnisse seiner Projekte in Buchform, zum Beispiel Nackt im Paradies (1997), Algerien, der unheimliche Krieg (1998), Weltpanorama (1998), Cocainelove (2005) und Eye on Africa (2009). Für seine Verdienste wurde Michael von Graffenried 2006 als Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in die französische Ehrenlegion aufgenommen.
Né en 1957 à Berne, le photographe Michael von Graffenried vit et travaille à Paris. Issu du photojournalisme, il se consacre aujourd’hui à des projets au long cours en utilisant différents supports médiatiques. En 2002, le film documentaire Guerre sans images – Algérie, je sais que tu sais, co-réalisé avec Mohammed Soudani, a été présenté au Festival du Film de Locarno. Ses images, exposées dans des galeries et des musées en France et en Suisse, ainsi qu’à New York, Alger, Hong Kong ou encore Beyrouth, font partie des fonds de la Bibliothèque nationale à Paris, la Fondation Suisse pour la Photographie à Winterthur et le Musée de l’Elysée à Lausanne. Il a publié plusieurs ouvrages, notamment Soudan, une guerre oubliée (1995), Nus au Paradis (1997), Algérie, Photographies d’une guerre sans images (1998), Cocainelove (2005) ou Eye on Africa (2009). En 2006, Michael von Graffenried a reçu l’insigne de Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres français.
Michael von Graffenried was born in Berne, Switzerland in 1957. Based in Paris he started as a photojournalist in 1978, travelling the world for numerous publications and works today on long term projects using different kinds of media frames, such as outdoor campaigns on public billboards or film. His documentary film War without Images he produced together with Mohammed Soudani was first screened at the Locarno filmfestival in 2002. He has exhibited widely in Switzerland and France, as well as in New York, Algiers, Hong Kong and Beirut. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Swiss Foundation for Photography, Winterthur, Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris and several other major European collections. His work appeared in many books, such as Sudan, a forgotten war (Benteli 1995), Naked in Paradise (Dewi Lewis 1996), Inside Algeria (Aperture 1998) and Cocainelove (Benteli 2005) or Eye on Africa (2009). Michael von Graffenried was given the title of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres of the French Légion d’Honneur in 2006.
